Cloning a Survey

Cloning a survey is creating a copy, like doing a ‘Save As’ in Word.  The copy is just like the original, but has no connection to the original.   There are three ways to clone a survey:

  • Cloning a local survey in My Surveys
  • Cloning a Remote Survey
  • Cloning Previous Versions of a Survey

Important Consideration when working with Cloned Survey: Edits to any cloned survey will not be able to be merged into the original survey. The clone becomes a new survey, and the Illume server does not associate it with the original.

Cloning a Survey on My Surveys Tab

A survey in the My Survey tab could be a new survey or a checked out survey.  To clone the survey in the My Survey tab:

  1. Right click on the name of the survey.
  1. Select the Clone option from the context menu.

6.5 - DatStat Illume Survey Manager - Survey Administration - Cloning a Survey 1

  1. Type in a name for the new survey when prompted.
  1. There is a check-box stating ‘Do not include disabled items in clone’.  In a survey items can be set with the show-if condition of ‘never shown’. This is typically utilized for items that were in earlier versions of the survey, and later the designer chose to no longer present those items to respondents going forward.  To omit survey items whose show-if condition is set to ‘Never shown (disabled)’, check the ‘Do not include disabled items in clone’ check box.

6.5 - DatStat Illume Survey Manager - Survey Administration - Cloning a Survey 2

  1. Click OK to create the clone.

Cloning a Remote Survey

Cloning a remote survey copies a survey from an Illume server (the Survey Administration tab) onto the user’s local computer (My Surveys). This can be accomplished by cloning the remote survey while on the My Surveys tab, or cloning the remote survey while on the Survey Administration tab.

Reasons to clone a remote survey:

  • Someone else has the survey checked out or a copy is needed for testing
  • Create a new survey that is very similar to the remote survey

To clone a remote survey in the My Surveys tab:

  1. Choose File Clone Remote Survey from the Illume Survey Manager menu.

6.5 - DatStat Illume Survey Manager - Survey Administration - Cloning a Survey 3

  1. Choose the survey to clone from the list of available surveys. The list may display only those surveys the logged in user has worked on. To display a list of all surveys, uncheck ‘Only display surveys that I have worked on’.

6.5 - DatStat Illume Survey Manager - Survey Administration - Cloning a Survey 4

  1. Give the survey a new name.

6.5 - DatStat Illume Survey Manager - Survey Administration - Cloning a Survey 6

  1. Click OK.

A new survey editor window will appear displaying the contents of the survey just cloned.

  1. You may now edit the survey.

The survey will be saved to the local machine and found in the My Surveys tab.

To clone a remote survey in the Survey Administration Tab

If the current user has sufficient privileges to see the Survey Administration tab, surveys can be cloned directly from the Illume server.

  1. In the Survey Administration tab, click the survey to be cloned.
  1. Right click and select Clone.

6.5 - DatStat Illume Survey Manager - Survey Administration - Cloning a Survey 5

Cloning Previous Versions of a Survey

Every time a change is made to a survey, the version number of the survey increases.  Surveys start in version 0 when initially created.  Once checked in, a survey is now in version 1 and remains in version 1 through the first publication.  If changes are made after publication, and the survey is re-published, the version number increases incrementally.  Every time a change is made within those versions Illume keeps a copy of the survey in its prior state.  Cloning a previous version of a survey can be helpful in determining when changes were made between different versions of a survey.

To make a clone of a specific version of a survey:

  1. Select your survey in the Survey Administration tab
  1. Right-click Properties

6.5 - DatStat Illume Survey Manager - Survey Administration - Cloning a Survey 7

  1. Select the Survey Action History tab
  1. Select any row that has the survey icon next to the version number and click on the Clone Survey Version button

6.5 - DatStat Illume Survey Manager - Survey Administration - Cloning a Survey 8

  1. Give the survey a new name and click OK
