Survey Security

Illume gives you control over several security settings, including browser cookies, interviewer sign ins, and survey session timeout. Read this guide to learn more about changing these security preferences.

1.Overview

To edit the Security settings:

  1. From within the Survey Designer go to the Survey menu and select Security:

2.Use browser cookies

This allows a cookie to be set on the participants’ machines.  A cookie is a small piece of data sent from the survey website and stored on the participants’ web browsers while the participants are browsing that website. For unauthenticated survey sessions this feature allows two things:

1.    Allows participants to resume interrupted surveys where they left off by clicking on the survey link.  This feature will not work for participants using security software that prevents cookies from being saved.

2.    Prevents multiple submissions (or “stuffing the ballot box”) by the same computer.   Multiple submissions are prevented unless cookies are deleted from the survey participant’s computer.  This option is not recommended in situations where a fairly high percentage of survey participants are expected to use computers in the same shared computing environments.

3.Require interviewer sign in

This feature is to be utilized within Interviewer-administered surveys in which there is a desire to capture the identity of the Interviewer and to authenticate that Interviewer as a defined User in the system.

Checking this box creates fields for Interviewer Login that appear within the Login page of a survey when launched.  The example below is from an authenticated survey in which the Interviewer must enter a study ID for the participant.  The Interviewer Login fields appear after the authentication variables and prior to the Log-In button.

6.5-DatStat Illume Survey Manager-Using the Survey Designer-Security-Require Interviewer SIgn in 1

Neither the placement of the Interviewer Login fields nor the terminology used (e.g. Interviewer, Username, Password), can be edited.

When the Interviewer enters the Username and Password, the survey authenticates the entered information against the defined Users in the Enterprise Manager.  If authentication fails, the survey cannot be launched.

Note:  This feature cannot be utilized in surveys collected offline via the Remote Data Collection add-on module.

4.Survey Session Timeout

Illume survey sessions can be set to expire, requiring the participant to re-authenticate after a period of inactivity.    The default setting is for the authenticated survey session to never expire.  To specify a Session Timeout:

  1. Select Use Session Timeout
  2. Enter a number of minutes for the Timout
  3. If a participant has a period of inactivity that exceeds the timeout session time, they will be forced to log back into their survey. The default message that appears is the following:

Your survey session has expired.

Your previous responses have been saved. To resume your survey session please select the original survey link or URL used to start this survey. Contact your survey administrator if you have troubles resuming your survey session.
